Briefs:

MMA to incorporate election campaign in anti-govt drive

LAHORE: The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) has decided to incorporate its mass contact campaign for the upcoming elections in an anti-government movement. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that the movement would not be launched in hurry, and leaders would mobilise workers after making plans, according to sources. The sources said that a meeting of the MMA supreme council, previously scheduled to be held on November 9, had been postponed till Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s return to the country, so that he could be taken into confidence as well over plans for the campaign. They said that publicly the MMA would create the impression that all its public meetings and rallies were against the government, but the actual purpose of these gatherings would be work for the religious alliance’s election campaign. The sources said that the final schedule for public meetings and demonstrations would probably be announced next month. The agenda of these activities would be anti-government policies, but during their speeches, leaders would try their best to persuade people to cast their votes in favour of religious parties’ candidates. A central leader of the JI said, “We are tired of raising our voices against the government in and outside parliament, and now we have decided to incorporate our anti-government drive into our mass contact and election campaign.” The JI has also set up a Rs 15 million fund for the upcoming mass contact campaign. qamar jabbar
